I started reading the article because it was about Sister Helen Prejean, the nun who wrote the book, Dead Man Walking , which was turned into a movie.   I met and spent a little time with this marvelous woman once when she was in my city doing some speaking.   Of course, she is famous for her long-time work trying to get rid of the death penalty.   I happen to agree with her.   But whatever one’s position is on this issue, the story of this woman---this nun---is remarkable.   She is old, spunky and spiritual.   I hope some day the same can be said for me! The interviewer and author of the article, Moni Basu, opens the story about the 75 year-old nun by talking about the harrowing ride she had on the way to the Louisiana State Prison.   “She could rival NASCAR’s Danica Patrick on the gas pedal,” she writes.   She enters the maximum-security prison, the nation’s largest with 6,000 inmates.   She is there to visit a man on death row, Manu...

I was driving along yesterday and spied a bumper sticker on the car in front of me.   I had never seen that sticker.   I have always liked bumper stickers.   They have been around for a long time.   I see bumper stickers as part of American cultural media.   The sticker communicates just as much as a tv advertisement or radio commercial.   Sometimes the sticker is literally advertising some business.   Others are humorous pieces and even others cover a range of communication options.             The sticker on the car in front of me was round.   At the top in fairly bold numbers I read 13.1.   Since I am a runner, I knew exactly what that meant.   It “told” me that someone in that car had run a half-marathon.   A half-marathon is 13.1 miles.   I have run quite a few half-marathons in my life---maybe 50 of them.   Had the sticker said 26.2, I would know there was ...

I am a sports enthusiast, but this is not about sports.  It is applicable to sports, but the focus finally is spiritual and not sports.  It could be about business and business teams, but it is not about business.  It is applicable to business, but the focus finally is spiritual and not business.  When you think about it, the term, “team,” is used in a number of contexts.  And I think that is wonderfully appropriate. As unlikely as it seems, I am now connected in the Twitter world.  When I write that, I am amazed at myself.  But I also am intrigued with the way the world communicates.  And there is no doubt our contemporary world communicates in quite different forms than when I was a little Quaker boy on an Indiana farm!  If I have some good news and want to proclaim it, then using contemporary media seems appropriate.
